What set this dramatic d\u00e9nouement in motion was mundane: a notes call\u2014Hollywood speak for creative feedback\u2014between Powell and other executives about a TV series based on the film&nbsp;<em>The First Wives Club,<\/em>&nbsp;which is being rebooted with an African-American cast. Two days later, Powell\u2019s 14-year career at Paramount was over, after she&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2018\/07\/paramount-tv-president-amy-powell-fired\">allegedly made racially offensive remarks<\/a>&nbsp;on the call\u2014and then denied it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Powell has engaged <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.creativespikedigital.com\/lftc\/attorneys\/bryan-j-freedman\/\">attorney <strong>Bryan Freedman<\/strong><\/a>\u2014who alleges the firing was due to gender bias\u2014what remains undisputed is who reported Powell\u2019s comments to H.R. and spurred the investigation. It was someone Powell likely didn\u2019t register was on the line: the assistant to another executive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Few outside of Hollywood understand the insight of and the access granted to film-industry assistants. \u201cI\u2019d say every call in Hollywood has no fewer than four people on it,\u201d said an employee at a management company, one of four current and former assistants interviewed for this article. \u201cYou have the two people who are actually talking, and then both of their assistants, who are on mute and listening in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The thinking behind this compulsory eavesdropping is simple: subordinates hear the day-to-day business that needs attending to, from scheduling travel to sending out scripts, without a boss having to tell anyone specifically what to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond that, party-line calls are the cornerstone of an apprenticeship that largely hinges on observing the film business up close. \u201cLet\u2019s say your boss has to fire someone\u2019s client. You\u2019re listening in and learning how to fire someone while maintaining a good relationship,\u201d said the manager\u2019s assistant. Most A-list agent, manager, or executive careers launch only after years of overhearing every word uttered between Hollywood insiders. (Powell herself started as an assistant at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But mastering how to gently lower the boom is not all these honchos-in-training overhear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s generally understood by 99 percent of the industry that the assistant is on [a call],\u201d said the production-company assistant. \u201cThat being said, people also forget about us.\u201d She described her time working at a major talent agency as \u201cthe entertainment equivalent of the C.I.A. You know everyone\u2019s secrets.\u201d A former studio assistant felt he had \u201cfull locker-room access; you see firsthand what\u2019s going on.\u201d For those calls that demand utter discretion, the top brass will sometimes say, \u201cHey assistants, drop off,\u201d after which those on the lower rungs are supposed to hang up, according to the manager\u2019s assistant. \u201cI\u2019ve heard rumors that people don\u2019t drop off.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees must sign confidentiality agreements upon being hired, which are meant to protect the top-secret information they\u2019ll inevitably overhear. And the staffers interviewed agree that anything related to the details of putting a movie or TV project together is kept strictly under wraps. But \u201cinterpersonal stuff,\u201d as one woman described it, is fair game as long as it\u2019s in the press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which agent axed a flunky after leaving her own cell phone in the back of an Uber and waiting too long for its return; which female producer threw a metal Rolodex at her subordinate\u2019s head; who has an escort service number listed in his phone\u2014these are all subjects that might come up once fellow assistants know each other well enough to do away with small talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The information is traded to steer each other toward a good \u201cdesk\u201d\u2014jargon used to describe the work they do as the de facto gatekeepers to Hollywood players. One successful screenwriter, who was once an assistant himself, goes out of his way to be nice to everyone sitting outside the office of a powerbroker: \u201cI know assistants need every boost they can get,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a grueling, grind of a job.\u201d Others are not so savvy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generally, it\u2019s still unusual to find someone low on the totem pole willing to speak out about questionable behavior\u2014even in the supposedly more empowered, Time\u2019s Up era. \u201cI think you say something when you\u2019re ready to burn your bridges or it\u2019s truly awful,\u201d said the manager\u2019s assistant\u2014perhaps like ex-assistant&nbsp;<strong>Rosette Laursen,<\/strong>&nbsp;who made headlines in 2017 when she published on Facebook a sexist screed her boss&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/rambling-reporter\/hollywood-assistant-told-sew-her-vagina-shut-gets-new-job-1101489\" target=\"_blank\">had accidentally e-mailed her<\/a>. Otherwise, bringing bad or ugly chatter to light might blow up your career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, they believe the industry will truly change only when the assistants themselves graduate, slipping behind those desks. Their millennial values have yet to be fully reflected in Hollywood\u2019s business culture\u2014but someday, they will be. \u201cIt\u2019ll be our generation rising up through the ranks and stopping [bad] behavior organically rather than a concerted backlash like #MeToo\u201d that truly changes Hollywood, said the manager\u2019s assistant.
