Bryan Freedman is the attack dog for powerful clients he portrays as underdogs. In today\u2019s court of public opinion, where narratives of oppression rule, it\u2019s often a winning strategy.<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Justin Baldoni<\/a>\u2019s fate in his clash over It Ends With Us<\/a><\/em> with Blake Lively<\/a> is yet to be determined. But one thing\u2019s certain. His lawyer Bryan Freedman<\/a> is already victorious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Put aside the billable-hour payday: Baldoni\u2019s co-defendant and partner in production company Wayfarer, the billionaire Steve Sarowitz, has reportedly pledged<\/a> $100 million to their defense. This case has supersized the entertainment attorney \u2014 already so high-profile for his troubled-celebrity client roster that he netted a 2024 Hollywood Reporter<\/em> cover profile<\/a> even before Lively\u2019s allegations went public \u2014 into a household name akin to his similarly TMZ<\/em>-tight legal compatriot Mark Geragos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a testament to Freedman that, so far, his client\u2019s battle with one of Hollywood\u2019s most powerful couples still remains a draw. Many observers expected Baldoni to apologize and quickly disappear after Lively coldcocked him in December via a blockbuster New York Times<\/em> story<\/a>, co-bylined by Megan Twohey, one of the key instigating reporters of the #MeToo movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, Freedman went on the warpath, threatening<\/a> to sue \u201canyone involved \u2026 into oblivion\u201d (he\u2019s since filed<\/a> a $250 million defamation claim against the paper), dumping documents he\u2019s termed \u201creceipts\u201d on a public website<\/a> and issuing so many aggressive statements to the media that Lively\u2019s legal team begged a judge to rein him in. Meanwhile, Baldoni, who in recent years had emerged as one of America\u2019s foremost male feminists, has received<\/a> crucial support from an ideologically unlikely mix of supporters with massive media platforms and one thing in common: They\u2019re also Freedman clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Freedman has always seen himself as the attack dog for the underdogs. Sure, he may represent wealthy figures known for their fame and charisma \u2014 but his most notable battles have typically been waged against large corporations whom he views as the true Goliaths. In this dispute with Lively, he\u2019s sought to portray her as the establishment figure, part of an insidious and powerful Hollywood web along with her pop-star friend Taylor Swift (or perhaps former friend, if the tabloids are to be believed<\/a>), and more consequentially, her actor-producer husband, Ryan Reynolds<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Litigating as he often does in the court of public opinion, Freedman knows that people prefer to identify with scrappy outsiders against institutional insiders: Katniss Everdeen, Luke Skywalker, Erin Brockovich. His MO is to position his clients, and himself, within today\u2019s favored narratives of oppression and marginalization. (He\u2019s told THR<\/em> that his intense \u201cprotective streak\u201d can be traced to unspecified childhood trauma.) In Freedman\u2019s framing, Lively is the popular mean girl, Baldoni the guileless picked-on good guy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, an important part of fighting in the media is fighting with<\/em> the media. While Freedman feeds his favored press outlets tip-offs on filings and colorful statements, confident that friendly voices on social platforms will in turn amplify his message, those who run counter to his interests know they\u2019ll face his ire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYashar writing an article about you,\u201d Freedman wrote me after THR <\/em>published coverage<\/a> he didn\u2019t like about his earlier litigation against Baldoni for alleged script theft from a man with cystic fibrosis. The subtext wasn\u2019t subtle, claiming to have deployed a former client, the online influencer and self-styled muckraker Yashar Ali, against a wayward member of the press. (Freedman had previously represented Ali in a failed<\/a> defamation suit against THR<\/em> co-editor-in-chief Maer Roshan when he helmed Los Angeles<\/em> magazine.) Later, <\/strong>when Freedman learned that THR<\/em> would be scrutinizing<\/a> his relationship with a controversial consultant whom Lively has accused of plotting to unfairly warp social media sentiment around the conflict, he protested that this publication was in league with Reynolds because his Deadpool & Wolverine<\/em> business partners Disney and Marvel advertise in THR<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Freedman\u2019s noisy belligerence sets him apart from his more buttoned-down Hollywood legal peers. He\u2019s often been compared to Marty Singer, who also bills for the bark, either through long letters notoriously demanding that recipients \u201cgovern yourself accordingly,\u201d or by shouting over the phone. There\u2019s a knowing performative element to Singer\u2019s pique, yet Freedman\u2019s passion appears genuine, even personal. And while some professional colleagues recoil at his style, and even his substance, it\u2019s endeared him to clients who appreciate his willingness to engage in today\u2019s variant of public trial by combat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Freedman, win or lose, the result is never Pyrrhic. His legend \u2014 and his practice\u2019s docket \u2014 only grows.
