{"id":41329,"date":"2024-03-13T20:54:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-14T03:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.creativespikedigital.com\/lftc\/?p=41329"},"modified":"2024-10-26T21:49:56","modified_gmt":"2024-10-27T04:49:56","slug":"kelly-clarkson-sues-ex-husband-to-affirm-possibly-expand-her-2-6-million-labor-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.creativespikedigital.com\/lftc\/news\/entertainment\/tv_film\/kelly-clarkson-sues-ex-husband-to-affirm-possibly-expand-her-2-6-million-labor-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Kelly Clarkson Sues Ex-Husband to Affirm, Possibly Expand Her $2.6 Million Labor Award"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-in-a-new-cross-complaint-singer-says-her-agreements-with-her-ex-husband-and-his-management-company-should-be-declared-void-and-unenforceable\">In a new cross-complaint, singer says her agreements with her ex-husband and his management company \u201cshould be declared void and unenforceable\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/kelly-clarkson\/\">Kelly Clarkson<\/a>&nbsp;has filed a new cross-complaint against her ex-husband Brandon Blackstock that seeks to affirm \u2014 and possibly expand \u2014 the $2.6 million award&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/kelly-clarkson-brandon-blackstock-california-labor-commission-ruling-1234906582\/\">she was granted last year<\/a>&nbsp;by the California Labor Commission under a November ruling that found Blackstock charged her for business deals he wasn\u2019t licensed to seek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new filing came after Blackstock appealed the November ruling on Dec. 1, 2023, saying in a petition that he and his family-run management firm, Starstruck Entertainment, were entitled to a separate, full-blown trial on the dispute in Los Angeles County Superior Court. While Blackstock\u2019s request is pending, Clarkson filed her cross-complaint Monday as a response to the September 2020 lawsuit brought by Starstruck that essentially touched off the ex-couple\u2019s financial war soon after Clarkson filed for divorce from Blackstock in June of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was shortly after the divorce went public that Starstruck, owned by Blackstock\u2019s father, Narvel Blackstock, sued Clarkson in Los Angeles for alleged breach of her \u201coral\u201d management contract and purported nonpayment of more than $1.4 million in commissions. Starstruck claimed that it \u201cdeveloped Clarkson into a mega superstar\u201d and would likely be owed $5.4 million in commissions by the end of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to Starstruck\u2019s claims, Clarkson went to the California Labor Commission a month later in November 2020, setting the stage for the decision late last year that found Blackstock was operating as an unlicensed talent agent in California. The commission found that Blackstock wasn\u2019t properly licensed when he procured Clarkson\u2019s judging gig on NBC\u2019s&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/the-voice\/\">The Voice<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;as well as contracts with Wayfair, Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL), and the&nbsp;<em>Billboard&nbsp;Music Awards<\/em>. The commission awarded Clarkson $2,641,374 for commissions unlawfully collected by Blackstock on or after Oct. 20, 2019 related to those four deals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her new cross-complaint, Clarkson is suing for judicial intervention related to labor code violations, saying she believes Blackstock and Starstruck violated the Talent Agencies Act by unlawfully acting in the capacity of a talent agency in California for the entire period of their working relationship, dating back to 2007. \u201cBased on the wrongful acts and conduct of Starstruck,\u201d her new filing claims, \u201call agreements between the parties, should be declared void and unenforceable, no monies should be paid by cross-complainants to Starstruck, and all monies previously paid by cross-complainants to Starstruck should be disgorged from Starstruck, forthwith.\u201d Clarkson is asking the court to order a \u201ccomplete accounting\u201d from Starstruck to determine if she\u2019s owed more than the $2.6 million outlined in the labor commission award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is morally, ethically and legally wrong to attempt to get monies back from your ex-husband who not only helped her as her manager but who used those earnings on their children and Kelly and Brandon\u2019s lifestyle during the marriage,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.creativespikedigital.com\/lftc\/lawyers\/bryan-j-freedman\/\">Blackstock\u2019s lawyer, Bryan Freedman<\/a>, tells\u00a0<em>Rolling Stone<\/em>\u00a0in response to the cross-complaint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clarkson\u2019s lawyer had no immediate comment. On her latest album,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/kelly-clarkson-chemistry-review-1234776064\/\">Chemistry<\/a><\/em>, Clarkson includes several songs that allude to her breakup with Blackstock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The couple\u2019s bitter breakup also came into view during the evidentiary hearing last year held by the labor commission before its ruling. In a brief filed by Clarkson\u2019s camp last July, Clarkson is quoted as having testified for the commission that she was never approached by NBC to work on the American version of\u00a0<em>The Voice<\/em>\u00a0before Blackstock reached out to them.
