The British actor-musician sued the\u00a0<\/strong>Transformers<\/em>\u00a0star in December 2020, alleging he terrorized and sexually battered her during a \u201cliving nightmare\u201d relationship<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

FKA Twigs<\/a> won a trial date for her claims against Shia LaBeouf<\/a> Monday after her lawyer accused the Transformers<\/em> actor of \u201cgaslighting\u201d the British avant-pop star amid her long-running lawsuit alleging \u201crelentless abuse\u201d during a \u201cliving nightmare\u201d relationship, Rolling Stone<\/em> has learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The singer-songwriter-actor, who released her mixtape Caprisongs<\/em> in January<\/a>, has a date to go before a jury on April 17, 2023, to present the sexual battery, assault, and intentional infliction of emotional distress claims that she filed in December 2020<\/a>, a court official confirmed Monday after a morning hearing. Attempted mediation in the case did not lead to a settlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe gaslighting has gone on long enough here and it\u2019s time to hold Shia LaBeouf accountable,\u201d Twigs\u2019 lawyer Bryan Freedman<\/a> tells\u00a0Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cMy client wants a trial date.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twigs, whose legal name is Tahliah Barnett, says\u00a0LaBeouf terrorized and assaulted her, both verbally and physically, during a tumultuous relationship that started soon after they made the movie\u00a0Honey Boy<\/em>\u00a0together in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barnett, 34, claims LaBeouf, 35, tried to choke her multiple times, including once during a violent attack at a gas station in February 2019. LaBeouf \u201cthrew Tahliah against the car and attempted to strangle her violently while screaming in her face,\u201d her lawsuit says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier that day, LaBeouf allegedly threw Barnett to the ground outside a hotel they had visited for Valentine\u2019s Day, and on the ride home, before the gas station attack, he was driving \u201cmaniacally\u201d when he removed his seatbelt and threatened \u201cto crash the car unless Tahliah professed her eternal love for him,\u201d her paperwork claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt may be surprising to you to learn that I was in an emotionally and physically abusive relationship. It was hard for me to process, too, during and after,\u201d she said in an Instagram post that coincided with her filing. \u201cI never thought something like this would happen to me. Which is why I have decided it\u2019s important for me to talk about it and try to help people understand that when you are under the coercive control of an abuser or in an intimate partner violent relationship, leaving doesn\u2019t feel like a safe or achievable option.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LaBeouf, who reportedly welcomed his first child with partner Mia Goth in recent months, initially struck an apologetic tone in an email to the New York Times<\/em><\/a>, writing, \u201cI have no excuses for my alcoholism or aggression, only rationalizations. I have been abusive to myself and everyone around me for years. I have a history of hurting the people closest to me. I\u2019m ashamed of that history and am sorry to those I hurt. There is nothing else I can really say.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LaBeouf later denied Barnett\u2019s allegations<\/a> in a February 2021 answer to her complaint, stating through his lawyers that he denied causing Barnett \u201cany injury or loss\u201d and that she is not \u201centitled to any relief or damages whatsoever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
