Citing breach-of-contract, copyright infringement and more, the jury trial seek lawsuit to prove its point also dropped Tarantino\u2019s 1993 contract with Miramax in the docket as Exhibit A&nbsp; \u2014 and that really pissed off Tarantino and his heavyweight Beverly Hills lawyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like \u201cI dare you, I double dare you motherfu*ker\u201d pissed off, as Samuel L. Jackson\u2019s iconic Jules says in&nbsp;<em>Pulp Fiction.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMiramax is wrong \u2013 plain and simple,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.creativespikedigital.com\/lftc\/attorneys\/bryan-j-freedman\/\">Bryan Freedman [Quentin Tarantino&#8217;s lawyer]<\/a> tells Deadline of the suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cQuentin Tarantino\u2019s contract is clear: he has the right to sell NFTs of his hand-written script for&nbsp;<em>Pulp Fiction<\/em>&nbsp;and this ham-fisted attempt to prevent him from doing so will fail,\u201d the Freedman &amp; Taitelman LLP partner adds in curt fashion. \u201cBut Miramax\u2019s callous decision to disclose confidential information about its filmmakers\u2019 contracts and compensation will irreparably tarnish its reputation long after this case is dismissed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Quentin Tarantino\u2019s contract is clear: he has the right to sell NFTs of his hand-written script for&nbsp;<em>Pulp Fiction<\/em>&nbsp;and this ham-fisted attempt to prevent him from doing so will fail. Jackson\u2019s Jules said in the iconic flick: \u201cMmm, this is a tasty burger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEager to cash in on the non-fungible token (\u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/nft\/\">NFT<\/a>\u2019) boom, as widely reported in the media, Quentin Tarantino recently announced plans to auction off seven \u2018exclusive scenes\u2019 from the 1994 motion picture<em>&nbsp;Pulp Fiction<\/em>&nbsp;in the form of NFTs,\u201d proclaims Miramax in a breach-of-contract and infringement lawsuit filed today in federal court in California (<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/TARANTINO-LAWSUIT.pdf\">read it here<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Oscar winner announced his foray into the digital art world at the NFT.NYC conference this month. No date has been laid down for the auctions, but we do know that Tarantino\u2019s NFTs are set to be seven scanned digital copies of his handwritten original scripts with audio commentary. However, one cease-and-desist letter later, the company that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/harvey-weinstein\/\">Harvey Weinstein<\/a>&nbsp;co-founded is looking for statutory damages and declaratory and injunctive relief in a jury trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTarantino\u2019s conduct has forced Miramax to bring this lawsuit against a valued collaborator in order to enforce, preserve, and protect its contractual and intellectual property rights relating to one of Miramax\u2019s most iconic and valuable film properties,\u201d according to the 22-page complaint filed by lawyers at Proskauer Rose LLP about the director\u2019s career-making second film, starring Jackson, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Ving Rhames, Tim Roth and a punchy Bruce Willis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLeft unchecked, Tarantino\u2019s conduct could mislead others into believing Miramax is involved in his venture,\u201d the suit states. \u201cAnd it could also mislead others into believing they have the rights to pursue similar deals or offerings, when in fact Miramax holds the rights needed to develop, market, and sell NFTs relating to its deep film library.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tarantino\u2019s reps couldn\u2019t be reached for comment on the lawsuit. However, Tuesday\u2019s filing does reveal that the director\u2019s own lawyers told Miramax that they \u201ccontended that Tarantino was acting within his \u2018Reserved Rights,\u2019 specifically the right to \u2018screenplay publication\u2019 with the NFT plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clearly Miramax begs to differ on what it sees as a one-time transaction not covered by any of QT\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Pulp Fiction<\/em>&nbsp;rights.
