{"id":18191,"date":"2021-03-01T12:16:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-01T20:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.creativespikedigital.com\/lftc\/?p=18191"},"modified":"2024-11-01T10:14:46","modified_gmt":"2024-11-01T17:14:46","slug":"is-judge-judys-multimillion-dollar-courtroom-battle-doomed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.creativespikedigital.com\/lftc\/news\/entertainment\/is-judge-judys-multimillion-dollar-courtroom-battle-doomed\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Judge Judy\u2019s Multimillion-Dollar Courtroom Battle Doomed?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tv-s-most-famous-jurist-is-countersuing-talent-agent-richard-lawrence-over-millions-in-packaging-fees\">TV\u2019s most famous jurist is countersuing talent agent Richard Lawrence over millions in packaging fees<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A Los Angeles Superior Court judge dealt TV\u2019s \u201cJudge Judy\u201d Sheindlin a major blow in her $22 million countersuit against talent agent Richard Lawrence and his company, Rebel Entertainment Partners, last week\u2014essentially throwing out her case, but giving her 30 days to amend her complaint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2021\/02\/judge-judy-lawsuit-loss-demurrer-judy-sheindlin-rebel-entertainment-amazon-1234700047\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">As&nbsp;<em>Deadline<\/em>&nbsp;reports<\/a>, Sheindlin sued Lawrence and Rebel in August for unfair competition and unjust enrichment, claiming the agent had no right to the $22 million in packaging fees he collected from the decades-long&nbsp;<em>Judge Judy<\/em>&nbsp;program because he represented two non-writing producers of the hit series, not Sheindlin herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>This was never a real lawsuit, only an attempt to insult an honorable man, and Judy knows that.<\/p><cite><strong>Bryan Freedman, of Freedman + Taitelman, LLP<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheindlin brought the countersuit against Lawrence two weeks&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2020\/08\/judge-judy-new-lawsuit-cbs-profits-library-sale-rebel-entertainment-1203003187\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">after he sued CBS\u2019s Big Ticket Entertainment and Sheindlin personally<\/a>&nbsp;for $5 million over profits from the $95 million sale of the&nbsp;<em>Judge Judy<\/em>&nbsp;library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf Mr. Lawrence can produce a contract signed by me and Mr. Lawrence on the same page at any time in history from the beginning of time,\u201d Judge Judy said when she first learned of the suit, \u201cI will toast that contract, smear it with cream cheese and eat it on national television.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attorneys for Lawrence\u2014whose Rebel Entertainment is the successor-in-interest to the original packaging agency, Abrams Rubaloff &amp; Lawrence\u2014argued in a demurrer that Sheindlin has no standing to sue him over a contract she\u2019s not a party to, and that her suit is beyond the statute of limitations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Judge Richard J. Burdge agreed Wednesday, sustaining the demurrer and granting Sheindland 30 days to amend her complaint, which he ruled was not sufficiently pled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOn August 19th, on behalf of Mr Lawrence, we stated that Judy had no legal standing and her case would be dismissed,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.creativespikedigital.com\/lftc\/attorneys\/bryan-j-freedman\/\">[Richard] Lawrence\u2019s attorney, Bryan Freedman<\/a>, told&nbsp;<em>Deadline<\/em>. \u201cAs the court made very clear today, that was a true statement. If Judy tries to continue with this case our client will seek sanctions and sue her for malicious prosecution. This was never a real lawsuit, only an attempt to insult an honorable man, and Judy knows that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freedman\u2019s demurrer,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2020\/11\/judge-judy-lawsuit-proftis-dismissal-attempt-judith-sheindlin-rebel-entertainment-1234613740\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">filed in November<\/a>, was less restrained, stating, \u201cBy filing this frivolous action, Judge Judy Sheindlin has shown her true colors: she is a cruel, petty, and vindictive person, without an ounce of empathy, decency, or tact. This isn\u2019t a lawsuit. It is an insult. Sheindlin filed her hit-and-run Complaint for seemingly no other reason than to engage in the baseless character assassination of Richard Lawrence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Returning fire, the former Manhattan family court jurist said at the time, \u201cPlease remember that for all the vicious and condescending names [Lawrence] ascribes to me, my work has supported him to the tune of over 22 million dollars. I neither need nor want Mr. Lawrence\u2019s money. A trial is the search for the truth. I look forward to looking behind his settlements and NDAs and exposing it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheindlin\u2019s lawyer, Todd Eagan, framed Wednesday\u2019s ruling as merely a prelude to victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is simply a procedural issue with the Court to clarify our claims by allowing us to file an amended Complaint,\u201d he said. \u201cThe court declined to dismiss the claims, and in making its ruling today the court assumed that all of the facts pled in the complaint are true\u2014and they are true.
