UPDATED<\/strong>: Atlanta rap trio\u00a0Migos<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday filed a complaint against their longtime attorney Damien Granderson, claiming that he \u201cabused his position of trust as Migos\u2019 fiduciary from the moment he was retained as Migos\u2019 lawyer\u201d and \u201ccheated [the group] out of millions of dollars,\u201d accusing him of \u201cglaring conflicts of interest\u201d and favoring the group\u2019s label, Quality Control, which he also represented. The suit, which does not specify an amount the group is seeking beyond \u201cmillions of dollars,\u201d accuses Granderson of professional malpractice and unjust enrichment, among other claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group \u2014 Quavious Marshall (\u201cQuavo\u201d), Kiari Cephus (\u201cOffset\u201d), Kirsnick Ball (\u201cTakeoff\u201d) \u2014 whose fourth album \u201cCulture III\u201d has been delayed for months, has been dogged by legal issues throughout much of its career. The lawsuit also alleges that Granderson\u2019s record deals first with 300 Entertainment, which the group left in 2017 via a pricey exit arrangement to join with Capitol, were not in its best interest and cost the group \u201cmillions of dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Granderson did not immediately respond to Variety<\/em>\u2018s request for comment, although Quality Control cofounder Pierre \u201cP\u201d Thomas called the lawsuit \u201cnonsense<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The complaint, filed by attorney Bryan Freedman<\/a>, also alleges that Granderson \u201cconcealed\u201d from the group that Quality Control had an exclusive label deal with Capitol that \u201cwould allow Capitol to distribute all albums that QCM produced and that QCM was actually profitting far more handsomely than was apparent from the face of the documents that Granderson personally presented to Migos for immediate execution.\u201d It says that a 2018 amendment to the group\u2019s deal with Capitol \u201ctriggered an extension of the exclusive recording agreement between QCM and Migos, which Granderson knew to contain terms that were unconscionable for Migos.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Migos\u2019 publishing, merchandising and performing rights deals are also cited in the lawsuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lawsuit accuses Granderson of \u201cbetray[ing] Migos when he failed disclose both the complete nature of his relationship with QCM and the complete nature of the conflict in representing both QCM and Migos,\u201d as well as taking \u201cmore compensation that is customary for other lawyers in the field\u201d and of \u201cincompetence\u201d in other negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also alleges that the terms of the group\u2019s deal with Quality Control \u201cwere, and are, extremely unreasonable to Migos\u201d and gave them \u201cthe right to far-above-industry-norm compensation even though QCM was not required to perform any work at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Granderson, who began working with Migos and QC in 2013, was with Davis Shapiro until it split into two firms in mid-2019, when founded Granderson Des Rochers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
