{"id":16269,"date":"2020-01-24T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-01-24T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.creativespikedigital.com\/lftc\/?p=16269"},"modified":"2024-11-01T14:02:30","modified_gmt":"2024-11-01T21:02:30","slug":"wolf-of-wall-street-sues-filmmakers-for-440m","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.creativespikedigital.com\/lftc\/news\/entertainment\/wolf-of-wall-street-sues-filmmakers-for-440m\/","title":{"rendered":"Wolf of Wall Street sues filmmakers for $440m"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The real-life \u2018Wolf of Wall Street\u2019 Jordan Belfort is suing the filmmakers over alleged fraud and breach of contract, claiming he wouldn\u2019t have sold his rights to the producers if he had known the film would be funded with criminal money.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belfort, played by Leonardo DiCaprio in the hit film, is suing the production company Red Granite for its entire box office takings &#8211; US$300 million (AU$440 million) &#8211; following the news that Red Granite co-founder Riza Aziz may have used embezzled money to finance the film.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Azis is now facing jail time in Malaysia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe class=\"desktop mobile\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/wolf-wall-street-producer-charged-165806388.html?format=embed\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" mozallowfullscreen=\"true\" webkitallowfullscreen=\"true\" allowtransparency=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; encrypted-media\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In a letter, <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.creativespikedigital.com\/lftc\/attorneys\/bryan-j-freedman\/\">Belfort\u2019s lawyer Bryan Freedman<\/a> claimed the famous businessman has been \u201csignificantly damaged\u201d by the company\u2019s \u201ctainting\u201d of his story.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belfort spent 22 months in jail and was forced to pay millions in compensation after he was found guilty of money laundering and securities fraud.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, Belfort claims he has been unable to maximise the film\u2019s earnings\u2019 potential due to the scandal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;One thing is clear: Prior to Mr. Belfort entering into the agreement which transferred his rights in Wolf of Wall Street,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/thr-esq\/wolf-wall-street-inspiration-jordan-belfort-files-300m-fraud-lawsuit-red-granite-1272309\" target=\"_blank\">Red Granite and its principals did not disclose to Mr. Belfort that they were using funds obtained from engaging in racketeering and other criminal activity to acquire his rights<\/a>. Had Mr. Belfort known those facts, he would have never agreed to enter into this contract. That is called fraud and, once again, Red Granite will be held accountable for its illegal activity&#8221;<\/p><cite>Bryan Freedman told The Hollywood Reporter.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Red Granite\u2019s lawyer Matthew L. Schwartz responded by describing the suit as \u201cdesperate and supremely ironic\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schwartz also characterised the suit as an attempt from Belfort to \u201cget out from under an agreement that for the first time in his life made him rich and famous through lawful and legitimate means\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The
