{"id":16195,"date":"2020-01-21T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-01-21T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.creativespikedigital.com\/lftc\/?p=16195"},"modified":"2024-11-01T14:10:38","modified_gmt":"2024-11-01T21:10:38","slug":"grammy-chaos-continues-with-a-flurry-of-reports-about-deborah-dugans-exit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.creativespikedigital.com\/lftc\/news\/entertainment\/grammy-chaos-continues-with-a-flurry-of-reports-about-deborah-dugans-exit\/","title":{"rendered":"Grammy Chaos Continues With a Flurry of Reports About Deborah Dugan\u2019s Exit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-with-less-than-a-week-to-go-before-this-year-s-ceremony-attention-has-been-diverted-to-the-recording-academy-s-org-chart\">With less than a week to go before this year\u2019s ceremony, attention has been diverted to the Recording Academy\u2019s org chart.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With the Grammys approaching on Sunday, the circumstances surrounding&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/style\/2020\/01\/deborah-dugan-recording-academy-removal\"><strong>Deborah Dugan<\/strong>\u2019s sudden removal<\/a>&nbsp;from her position as chief executive and president of the Recording Academy remain unclear\u2014though the reporting has at least brought some attention to the issues Dugan talked about before her exit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grammy.com\/grammys\/news\/important-message-harvey-mason-jr-chair-board-and-interim-presidentceo\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">letter<\/a>&nbsp;addressed to the \u201cAcademy Family\u201d and published on the Grammy website on Monday, Dugan\u2019s interim replacement,&nbsp;<strong>Harvey Mason Jr.,<\/strong>&nbsp;wrote, \u201cIn November of 2019, the Executive Committee became aware of abusive work environment complaints alleged against Ms. Dugan.\u201d (This, according to the academy, was the reason she was placed on leave.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mason Jr. went on to claim that Dugan\u2019s own allegations against the Academy\u2014which reportedly addressed issues with the organization\u2019s governance and financial management, and constituted, according to Dugan <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.creativespikedigital.com\/lftc\/attorneys\/bryan-j-freedman\/\">attorney&nbsp;<strong>Bryan Freedman<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong>&nbsp;the real reason she was pushed out\u2014were only made after those complaints were lodged against her. \u201cMs. Dugan\u2019s attorney then informed the Executive Committee that if Ms. Dugan was paid millions of dollars, she would \u2018withdraw\u2019 her allegations and resign,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Saturday the&nbsp;<em>Hollywood Reporter<\/em>&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/ousted-recording-academy-chief-given-security-detail-disturbing-threat-says-lawyer-1270972\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;two immediate consequences of Dugan\u2019s removal. Freedman told the trade that he hired a security detail for her after a threat was made Friday night, saying, \u201cBased upon credible and extremely disturbing information, Deborah Dugan now has 24-hour, round-the-clock security.\u201d And Champagne Billecart-Salmon dropped its Grammy sponsorship over the conflict. \u201cI have worked with Deb Dugan for many years going back to when she was CEO of (Red),\u201d the brand\u2019s Americas director,&nbsp;<strong>Geoffrey Loisel,<\/strong>&nbsp;told&nbsp;<em>THR.<\/em>&nbsp;\u201cShe is a person with high ethical standards and has always been the utmost professional in our business dealings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Showbiz411&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.showbiz411.com\/2020\/01\/19\/exclusive-recording-academy-ceo-ouster-may-result-in-filing-of-major-lawsuit-against-deborah-dugan-by-executive-assistant\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;that&nbsp;<strong>Claudine Little,<\/strong>&nbsp;a longtime assistant to Dugan predecessor&nbsp;<strong>Neil Portnow<\/strong>&nbsp;who also worked for Dugan, plans to file a lawsuit alleging that \u201cDugan caused an untenable situation in the executive offices that included verbal abuse and mistreatment.\u201d Little has retained attorney&nbsp;<strong>Patty Glaser,<\/strong>&nbsp;who, as&nbsp;<em>Variety<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/biz\/news\/deborah-dugan-patty-glaser-recording-academy-grammys-lawsuit-1203473150\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pointed out<\/a>, previously represented&nbsp;<strong>Harvey Weinstein<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Charlie Walk,<\/strong>&nbsp;as well as Kirk Kerkorian,&nbsp;<strong>Keith Olbermann,<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Conan O\u2019Brien.<\/strong>&nbsp;(There\u2019s no official news that Little is the \u201csenior female executive\u201d who the academy said had accused Dugan of misconduct, but&nbsp;<em>Variety<\/em>\u2019s sources said as much, and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/01\/16\/arts\/music\/grammys-deborah-dugan-misconduct.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;reported on Thursday that an assistant had made such an accusation against Dugan. On Tuesday, Dugan\u2019s lawyer didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment about this potential lawsuit or Dugan\u2019s security concerns.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One upshot of all this chaos is an invigorated focus on the types of changes Dugan had said she was trying to make at the academy. The memo she sent to the organization\u2019s human resources department, according to the&nbsp;<em>Times,<\/em>&nbsp;made allegations about \u201cvoting irregularities, financial mismanagement, \u2018exorbitant and unnecessary\u2019 legal bills, and conflicts of interest involving members of the academy\u2019s board, executive committee, and outside lawyers.\u201d&nbsp;<em>Variety<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/music\/news\/recording-academy-grammys-paid-millions-law-firms-deborah-dugan-1203471913\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">noted<\/a>&nbsp;that the academy\u2019s tax records show that between 2013 and 2017, the nonprofit paid almost $15 million to two outside law firms whose leaders have worked with Portnow for decades and represented academy executives and trustees, including Mason Jr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re also going out very soon for an in-house lawyer,\u201d Dugan&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/music\/news\/deborah-dugan-recording-academy-out-what-happened-1203471384\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told&nbsp;<em>Variety<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;last month. \u201cThey have not had one, which is mind-boggling to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In that same interview, Dugan gestured toward some other changes she was interested in making, such as improving the academy\u2019s much-criticized record on diversity and its organizational structure. \u201cThings here are about access to the top,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I operate with agile teams and I could give a fuck about hierarchy. It shouldn\u2019t be about access to me. It should be \u2018I\u2019m going to empower you. Here\u2019s your team and here\u2019s your money.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The examination of the academy has continued in other corners too. On Instagram, the Public Enemy rapper&nbsp;<strong>Chuck D<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B7cNiggAqva\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a>, \u201cI salute Deborah Dugan for her truth and courage to try and effect change. As always, a bunch of ignorant, testosterone-fueled, usually old white men stop progress and screw it up,\u201d and recalled the group\u2019s boycott of the 1989 Grammys over its treatment of hip-hop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amid the flurry of accusations and reports, the timing of the academy\u2019s decision to remove Dugan remains especially head-scratching. As Mason Jr.\u2019s letter noted, the complaint against her was made back in November.
