When our ability to speak is not restrained by a 28-page contract and legal threats, we will expose what happens when you \u2018step up\u2019 at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/music\/news\/task-force-diversity-will-work-with-recording-academy-1203480949\/\">Recording Academy<\/a>, a public nonprofit,\u201d<\/p><cite>wrote her <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.creativespikedigital.com\/lftc\/attorneys\/bryan-j-freedman\/\">attorney Bryan Freedman.<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In the wake of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/music\/news\/recording-academy-head-deborah-dugan-placed-on-administrative-leave-1203470308\/\">Dugan\u2019s sudden removal from her post as president\/CEO of the Recording Academy<\/a>&nbsp;on Thursday \u2014 a mere five months after she\u2019d taken charge, and just ten days before the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/grammy-awards\/\">Grammy Awards<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 even insiders were stunned by the abruptness of the move and perplexed by the purported reasons for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/music\/news\/grammy-deborah-dugan-recording-academy-ouster-coup-1203470424\/\">sources close to the situation tell&nbsp;<em>Variety<\/em>&nbsp;<\/a>that what may have taken place was a \u201ccoup\u201d: a move by entrenched Academy veterans to discredit and remove Dugan, who came in promising significant changes to the organization, before she could establish herself with a successful first show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An o<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/music\/news\/recording-academy-head-deborah-dugan-placed-on-administrative-leave-1203470308\/\">fficial Academy statement<\/a>&nbsp;reads in part, \u201cIn light of concerns raised to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/recording-academy\/\">Recording Academy<\/a>&nbsp;Board of Trustees, including a formal allegation of misconduct by a senior female member of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2019\/music\/news\/recording-academy-diversity-task-force-report-1203433961\/\">Recording Academy<\/a>&nbsp;team, the Board has placed [Dugan] on administrative leave, effective immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freedman\u2019s statement references former Grammy chief Neil Portnow\u2019s controversial 2018 comment that female artists and executives need to \u201cstep up\u201d in order to advance in the music industry.
