{"id":13105,"date":"2019-10-31T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-10-31T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ftllp.net\/?p=13105"},"modified":"2025-11-05T15:53:20","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T23:53:20","slug":"johnny-depp-settles-legal-battle-with-former-lawyer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.creativespikedigital.com\/lftc\/news\/entertainment\/tv_film\/johnny-depp-settles-legal-battle-with-former-lawyer\/","title":{"rendered":"Johnny Depp settles legal battle with former lawyer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Hollywood actor Johnny Depp has settled a long-running legal battle with a former lawyer he accused of wrongly collecting millions of dollars in fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lawyer representing Depp said he had won an \u201ceight-figure\u201d settlement from Jake Bloom\u2019s firm, Bloom Hergott.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depp had alleged Mr Bloom improperly collected more than 30 million US dollars \u2013 about \u00a323 million \u2013 over their 18-year working relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A trial had been scheduled to begin in December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Johnny Depp has settled a lawsuit with a former lawyer he accused of wrongly collecting millions of dollars (Ian West\/PA)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement, Depp\u2019s lawyer&nbsp;Adam Waldman said: \u201cToday, Bloom Hergott provided&nbsp;Johnny Depp&nbsp;an eight-figure payment to settle Mr Depp\u2019s lawsuit against the firm for fraud, conflict of interest, disgorgement of over 30 million dollars in voidable fees and other malfeasance that they engaged in over nearly two decades.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depp, star of blockbuster films including&nbsp;Pirates Of The Caribbean, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and&nbsp;Alice In Wonderland, sued Mr Bloom in October 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He argued their agreement should have been in writing, rather than based on a handshake&nbsp;as is often the case in Hollywood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Bloom counter-sued and asked a judge to throw the case out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard, who he has sued for defamation (Jonathan BradyPA)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However in August 2018, Depp, 56, scored a pivotal victory when a judge in Los Angeles ruled in his favour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.creativespikedigital.com\/lftc\/attorneys\/bryan-j-freedman\/\">Bryan Freedman, the lawyer representing Bloom Hergott<\/a>, confirmed a settlement has been reached, saying it was for a \u201cfraction\u201d of Depp\u2019s original demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>While the firm was confident it would prevail at trial, we are nonetheless pleased with this resolution as it expedites the firm\u2019s winding down process and allows it to get off the endless Johnny Depp litigation train.<\/p>\n<cite>added Freedman<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Depp is no stranger to legal wrangles and was involved in a dispute with&nbsp;his former managers,&nbsp;the Management Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He accused them of mishandling his affairs and pushing him to the brink of financial ruin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a counter suit, the group said Depp had been responsible for his own financial woes, accusing him of spending millions of dollars on luxury homes, wine, art and a cannon used to scatter the ashes of writer Hunter S Thompson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That lawsuit was settled in July 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depp remains locked in a legal battle with his ex-wife, the actress Amber Heard, who he accused of defamation over a newspaper op-ed in which she described herself as a&nbsp;victim of domestic abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hollywood actor Johnny Depp has settled a long-running legal battle with a former lawyer he accused of wrongly collecting millions of dollars in fees.
