The seven-page ruling (<a href=\"https:\/\/pmcdeadline2.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/04\/arbitrators_award__120425184759.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">read it here<\/a>) filed today in LA Superior Court determines that Sonnenfeld owes 10% of the $3.5 million he\u2019s getting for the film.&nbsp;<em>Men in Black III<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.deadline.com\/2011\/12\/hot-trailer-men-in-black-3\/\">comes out&nbsp;<\/a>on May 25, 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a February 2 hearing, Sonnenfeld, represented by Edward Anderson of Anderson General &amp; Entertainment Law, argued that because he \u201cterminated his agency agreement with UTA in or about mid-April\u201d 1995, he did not owe them anything for work he subsequently did on any&nbsp;<em>MIB<\/em>&nbsp;sequels. <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.creativespikedigital.com\/lftc\/attorneys\/bryan-j-freedman\/\">UTA, represented by Bryan Freedman<\/a> and Steven Stiglitz of Freedman &amp; Taitelman, disagreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For one, UTA noted that Sonnenfeld, who left for CAA and is now at WME, was a client of theirs when he \u201centered into a written agreement with Columbia Pictures dated April 4, 1995 to direct the motion picture Men in Black.\u201d Also, the agency, which received $325,000 from Sonnenfeld on&nbsp;<em>MIB I,<\/em>&nbsp;which came out on July 2, 1997, and&nbsp;<em>MiB II,<\/em>&nbsp;which came out on July 3, 2002, did the heavy lifting on Sonnenfeld\u2019s MIB deal. UTA, as arbitrator and Hollywood lawyer Howard Weitzman noted, \u201cprocured and substantially negotiated the initial MIB Agreement \u2026 which provided Sonnenfeld with the right of first negotiation to direct any and all sequels to MIB.\u201d Weitzman further stated in his ruling, dated March 16, \u201csuch \u2018right of first negotiation\u2019 is legally enforceable and is not uncommon in the feature film business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The binding DGA ruling still must be confirmed by the court, at which point Sonnenfeld has 30 days to pay the agency.
